UK investors are being encouraged to contact the Dundee Waterfront team directly with their ideas. The development sites currently feature occupiers ranging from industry and light manufacturing through to professional services firm, retailers and hotels.
A further million square feet of development space across eight sites was recently released by the City Council. Our Enterprise has now reserved Site 2 and discussions are underway with a leading developer for Site 6. The different sites can be viewed at dundeewaterfront.com/zones
Uses for the remaining sites include professional services firms, financial services, public and government organisations, technology, biosciences, software, contact centres, retail, hotels, bars, restaurants, leisure, recreation and residential.
Dundee Waterfront Project Director Allan Watt says the choice of uses is only really restricted by imagination: “Dundee Waterfront is a blank canvas of development opportunity. With the V&A Museum of Design Dundee we will have one of the UK’s leading museum assets that will attract hundreds of thousands of new visitors.
“There are major opportunities for businesses of all sizes to invest in the Waterfront and take a long-term stake in the development of the ‘New Dundee’.
An innovative set of online design and planning guidelines for each individual site steers investors, developers and their advisers on how to approach building projects. The objective is to encourage sustainable, design-led development that reflects Dundee’s status as the UK’s first UNESCO City of Design.
Mike Galloway, Executive Director of City Development with Dundee City Council said: “The guides will help businesses understand our approach to development, and how they can partner with us as the Waterfront expands. Almost all of the sites within the Central Waterfront are owned by Dundee City Council, so we can ensure everyone gains from the project.”

Private sector engages
This year, 2016, has been marked by a rush of new private sector investment in Dundee Waterfront.
Leading UK development and regeneration company, Our Enterprise, which has developed a pioneering ‘social legacy’ business model, will invest £25m in Site 2 to build 91 apartments and create a design and innovation quarter aimed at retaining the city’s graduates.
Two city blocks will house ‘Design, make and sell’ units suitable for small, craft and artisan enterprises, plus high-quality apartments designed for professionals and couples. Our Enterprise will also build offices for a wide range of occupiers.
Another leading construction and infrastructure company is fine tuning proposals to build flats, premium office space and a hotel on Site 6, which is adjacent to the V&A Museum of Design Dundee.
Flybe has just introduced a new international service from Dundee which will is now operating six times a week.
Forth Ports is investing £10m in a project that will enable Dundee Port to capitalise on the expansion in renewables and decommissioning work from the North Sea.
And Dundee – famous for cartoon characters such as Dennis the Menace, Desperate Dan and Oor Wullie – looks set to have a new Comics Centre in the Waterfront. Dundee publisher DC Thomson is working on a feasibility study for the new centre to be located on Site 2, opposite the Malmaison Hotel.
Commenting on these major private sector investments, Dundee City Council Executive Director of City Development Mike Galloway said: “These imaginative developments match our desire to work with partners able to deliver our vision for the Waterfront. Dundee wants more UK businesses to share in our plans to grow this city.”
Perhaps the best news of all is that thousands of new jobs are being created in Dundee Waterfront, many suited to the younger generation.
