Through the use of course analysis, training drills and presentations we will focus on the many different areas needed to build and develop a top-class partnership. Including;
All 4 will be published within the first 7 days of the month to enable you to train as and when your own schedule allows. Each training plan will consist of a full course taken from one of the future International championship judges or a recent championship. We will provide analysis of the skills required to complete this course, to help you compare the skills against those in your current skill set. The group will be encouraged to discuss any common weaknesses with additional drills suggested to fix and develop the skill. There will also be discussions encouraged on the various handling options and the pros and cons of each strategy. If route options are included on the course, these different paths will be identified, and the group encouraged to time and post their findings. Each partnership will be looking to find the specific handling and route options for them to gain their optimum split-second time saving. The different running strategies required for all the different events will be related to the course, what you might do differently to win the actual round compared to selection runs, team runs, qualifying for an EO final or Pentathlon runs.
Based on the chosen course, there will be several specific training drills and sequences supplied for you to focus on and work through to enhance your partnership. “Compete to your strengths and train to your weaknesses” will be a key factor in this training and we will be looking to develop skills above and beyond those required for the actual course.
Representing your country is not just about dog training and handling. Our guest presenters will present on a variety of topics with each will bring valuable knowledge in their areas of expertise such as dog fitness, handler fitness, mental game and dog training. Additional topics either requested by members or believed to be of importance will be added to this list.
The premise behind these is to prepare handlers for Try outs and Championships. An obvious benefit is to expose handlers and dogs on a regular basis to the judges courses that they are going to face. But in addition, with the ethos of practice makes perfect and familiarity breeds success, we aim to follow a similar format to those events on these days. We aim to make it “the norm” for handlers to run on these judges courses, in the correct size arena, on the championship equipment with the same course walking and competing format whilst under a level of pressure. Whilst it is impossible to create the exact competition environment, we can go a long way towards it.
The courses and layouts used will only be from future Try Out or Championship judges and will be detailed when dates are announced. Handlers will run 4 courses throughout their time at the venue. On arrival they will receive the course plans on paper, before having a strict 8 minute course walking and then running the course following a strict running order. The process will then be repeated for the remaining 3 courses with running orders rotated by 25% so people run at different places within their group on each course. At the end of the four courses, handlers will be given 2 minutes on each of the two course layouts to train or reward any sections, contacts or weave entries they wish.
Groups will have approximately 20 dogs and the sessions will be run over 4.5 hours. A judge will be present to judge all runs and data will be collected on faults and times including split times throughout each course. Handlers will be provided with their data and comparative data, showing the fastest and average times by height category and overall. This will allow handlers to compare their current times and identify areas of strength and weakness and enables them to get an understanding of where they are in comparison to their peers and not just their training circle. The data will help to identify optimum times on the course, allowing trends to be seen on fastest times and route choices. Although times will be shared, confidentiality is assured and partnership names will not be published with the data.
The venue and exact format of the four runs will vary throughout the year and International Insight members will be have first priority on booking and a heavily discounted price.
We will interview team managers and coaching staff of the GB and UK teams for you to form a better understanding of what they are looking for in their selections and from their teams at events. The experience and insight from these people will be of benefit even if they manage a team from a country you cannot be part of. Leading world handlers will be interviewed for you to appreciate the dedication taken to achieve their successes and the steps they took and/or are taking to take them and/or keep them at the highest level in our sport. Interviews with Championship judges will ascertain their design ideas and principles to give you an insight to the types of course you will face.
You will have the opportunity to put your own questions to Team managers and coaching staff, guest presenters, judges and the leading world handlers.
We all need someone to fall back on and to help on a more personal level. We will try to help pair people to others to help them in a mentorship role.
